We were thrilled to work together with the award-winning Campbell River Museum to conceptualize and create an interactive touch screen that welcomes new visitors by connecting them to the history and nature of the immediate area.

Looking out the windows in the museum foyer presents a spectacular view of Discovery Passage, Quadra Island, and the road entering the city.  With a simple tap of the screen, museum audiences learn about the beautiful landscape right before their eyes.
Exploring a panorama of the ocean view, guests can zoom in on historic photos and maps; watch and listen to stories from First Nations and longtime residents, and discover the rich marine life under the sea. Built by a local craftsman, the cabinet is made from beautiful native Western Maple that blends modern technology with the organic shape and feel of the wood.

Every fall, countless visitors come to the Quinsam River Hatchery to witness the thousands of salmon returning to the river to spawn.  As one of Canada’s largest salmon rearing facilities, the Quinsam River Hatchery had an opportunity to provide educational content to encourage the discovery of salmon species and their ecosystems.
They came to us with the vision of creating a family-friendly exhibition that was interactive and fascinating for all ages.  In particular, we faced the challenge of limited floor space in an unstaffed facility.
Set against a backdrop of high-resolution underwater panoramas, the centre now offers an immersive environment to explore the world from a salmon’s perspective: by listening to the underwater sounds from the river, watching a short documentary, and by touching 3D models that let visitors feel the morphological changes that salmon undergo, as they journey from the ocean back to their spawning grounds.  Using our rugged, custom-designed video microscope, guests closely examine the insect larvae that salmon feed on and share what they see on a high definition screen.

Located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, the City of Campbell River offers breathtaking views of the ocean set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.  The community is home to over 35,000 people and attracts thousands of visitors each year who come for the renowned fishing, skiing and natural beauty.
To enhance business and tourism opportunities, the City of Campbell River started a bold process to rethink and revitalize its downtown core.  We were honoured to document various phases of the process over the years, from community discussion forums to the actual construction activities and Live Streets events programming.  We used high-resolution time-lapse cameras to record selected developments over the course of 7 months.

This project is a partnership between researchers at Simon Fraser University, Heiltsuk First Nation, the University of Victoria, supported by the Hakai Institute and various funders. It was born out of the Heiltsuk’s interest in documenting their long-term connections to their traditional territory. The focus is on Hauyat on Northern Hunter Island because of its rich archaeological and ethnographic records, and because many Heiltsuk today are deeply connected to this place. At Hauyat, we have been documenting how the Heiltsuk lived in, interacted with, and modified the land and seascape — from mountain top to ocean floor.
Trusted by the community, and in close cooperation with all partners, we documented not just the whole process, but helped documenting many first hand interviews. Our presentation concept includes an immersive virtual tour that puts memories and voices on the land – from ancestral stories to personal memories and scientific results. The launch of the community touch screen and public website is scheduled for later this year, once final community consultations will be concluded — stay tuned.
